When TV shows die they don’t fade away, instead they go into syndication. And that is why there are four TV spin offs, one cartoon, countless video and board games, a near infinite number of novels and eleven movies in the Star Trek franchise to date. You can read more on the movies with Cracked writer Peter Lynn’s Best and Worse Star Trek Movies of all time. Or check out Chris Bucholz’s article on the new movie Star Trek Prequel Spoilers. To get a sense of how much actual science has made its way into the science fiction universe of Star Trek, ScientificAmerican.com spoke to Lawrence Krauss, author of The Physics of Star Trek, the first edition of which appeared on bookshelves in 1995. Balkanize Me: It finally happens to the crumbling Romulan Star Empire. Specifically, Commander Donatra declares herself empress of a new interstellar nation, the Imperial Romulan State, with the result that Romulan space is effectively split in two. The Klingons agree to recognise Donatra’s government, eager to encourage division among the Romulan people. The Federation is pressured into showing solidarity with its Klingon allies and so also ends up recognizing the IRS.The value of space travel was impressed on me at a young age. While my introduction to intergalactic exploration was informal, it left a lasting impact. These lessons in bravery and adventure were held weekly, not counting reruns. I am, of course, referring to the TV show Star Trek., for all its schmaltz and camp, has at its heart a very real passion for discovery and an enduring faith in man’s untapped potential, as well as his unquenchable thirst for knowledge. It is Star Trek that presented me with the idea that, as the inhabitants of Earth step out into the vast realm of space, we must take that step as a people united or else we will fail.Continuity Nod: Many. Most significantly to the first two novels of the Star Trek: Titan series and the Star Trek: A Time to… series, which introduced President Bacco and set the political stage for this novel. To avoid the production costs of having to film a ship landing, the writers dreamed up “transporter” technology, inadvertently creating one of the best known features in the Star Trek Universe and a plot device that would be abused in ways the original writers could never have imagined. When I first wrote the book, we thought most stars could have planets, but we had no idea of the frequency or of the diversity of ways that exoplanets could form. There’s water on Mars, and it was probably once warm; Jupiter’s moon Europa likely has a liquid ocean. For exoplanets not in the Earth-like Goldilocks zone around their stars, maybe they have an environment sustainable for non-Earth-like life. Perhaps there is life out there that is silicon-based rather than carbon-based like our own.

There are many things that you can do to pre-prepare yourself and your family for travel. By being as prepared as you can be, you are setting yourself up for a great getaway that will minimize any unpleasant circumstances that sometimes arise with travel.

In order to have the best vacation possible, I’m going to share with you the must know tricks and travel tips before you travel.

The very first thing you must do is RESEARCH. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about your destination prior to arrival. Yes, this is going to require some time and effort on your part but it is going to be more than worth it. This is the only way to truly understand what it is you want from your vacation and what you want to do on your vacation.

Here are some things that you should always know about your destination.

Weather – You need to know what you should be packing and planning for.Paperwork and Documentation – Know what is needed to travel to your particular destination.Know if there are any diseases common to the area you will be traveling to – this way you are able to take preventative measures.Costs of local items – You want to be able to properly plan your budget; remember to include taxes and tipping.Holidays and festivals – check to see when these occur for your destination as you may find limited services on those days.

The best holidays are the ones we are most prepared for. Do yourself a favour; make it a habit to always know as much as you can about your destination before you travel. It’ll make all the difference in the world!

What are some other things that you can do to prepare yourself? Use these travel tips before you travel.

1. Make 2 photocopies of your passport. Take one and put it in a safe place or leave it with a friend. Take the other one with you and keep it in a separate place from your passport, this way should your passport become lost or stolen, you can use the copy to exit the country and it will also facilitate the replacement process.

2. Email yourself important information such as: airline numbers and flight information, credit card numbers, passport and driver’s licence numbers and anything else that may be of importance to you. This way if anything is lost or stolen, you are just and internet connection away.

3. Know your banking information. For your credit card, make sure that the valid dates will remain valid while you’re traveling, know your available spending amount and don’t forget to leave some room on it for emergencies. Check your ATM and debit cards’ daily and total limits.

4. Learn some local phrases. If you are traveling to a country with a foreign language, it’s always nice to know some of the local phrases. Knowing the “polite words” and just a few local phrases will be a huge help. You will find that natives really appreciate this and will tend to be more receptive to your questions. Maybe you’ll even make a new friend while you’re at it!

5. Be aware of the voltage that’s used for the country you’re traveling to. If you are taking anything that requires an outlet; cell phone, computer, video camera, etc. make sure to purchase plug adapters. For things such as hairdryers, curling irons, electric razors, etc to purchase an actual voltage converter unless your appliance has multiple voltage currencies.

When traveling to a foreign country it’s always best to be as prepared as you can be. Do as much research as you possibly can, remember these travel tips before you travel and your trip abroad is sure to be a success.

Here’s your final checklist: Passport, tickets, car rental and hotel reservation receipts/agreements, credit cards, medications or prescriptions, if required, addresses, password and any other important information that you may need. Don’t forget the most important thing: your adventurous travel mind, see and learn as much as you can and have the time of your life!

A traveler to Australia might need a brief respite after arrival due to the distance it has taken to travel to the Continent. Some travelers might be groggy and feel out of sorts for a day or two because of the time differences involved, and the traveler might not be clear on what they are allowed to bring into the country and what is strictly prohibited. Plants and plant by-products require a quarantine period which might slow travelers down considerably.

The shopping hours throughout Australia are generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but in some locations, there are opportunities to shop on Saturday and Sunday and that choice is left up to the specific retailer. The customary enjoyment of tobacco while shopping is not tolerated in any store or restaurant and smoking on any type of public transportation or building is considered to be very unacceptable conduct.

There is a variety of transportation modes available throughout Australia. A traveler can get great bargains on bus tickets if they participate in discount card programs. There are terrific discounts for travelers with this type of membership because the discounts extend to tours at public buildings, amusement parks and arcades and many fine dining opportunities.

Visitors to Australia have free sightseeing trips that they can enjoy. While shopping Australia for many items, there are some tipping rules that will make the shopping go smoother. While dining with friends at lunch or dinner, it is customary to tip all servers and wait staff at least 10 percent of the final bill, and tip the people who help along the shopping path such as porters at hotels and taxi drivers who speed travelers to their next shopping destination.

Taking advantage of many travel discounts will be high on every travelers list. A visitor to Australia will have to be mindful of the time changes throughout the Continent that could have a direct effect on scheduling a vacation or a daily shopping excursion to other parts of the Continent that have not been visited yet. The time changes, in conjunction with the air travel fatigue, might overcome older travelers. It is always a good idea to keep the time factor, and time schedules for transportation and retail locations handy at all times.

When planning vacation trips to any foreign countries, there are many entry rules that will apply. In order to enter the Continent of Australia, travelers are required to have a valid passport on them at the point of entry, and some people run into difficulties because they do not have a visitor visa or student visa to present with the passport. The only exceptions to the two-document rule apply to natives of Australia and those that hold passports from New Zealand.

Duty-free shopping is encouraged at all major airports throughout the world. For travelers that plan to visit Australia, there are rules that apply to duty-free items that arrive with the passenger at the point of entry. Travelers must declare any foreign currencies that they enter Australia with, and remember to declare tobacco products too because there is a certain limit allowed for each person that travels. Age limits will apply to travelers who bring duty-free items into Australia too.

All visitors to the Land Down Under is required any of the visas to travel to Australia.

As a holidaymaker, you are required to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa.

Australia’s Cutting Edge Entry System for Visitors

Getting an Australian Holiday Visa is so easy.

With the advent of new systems and technology — allowing Australia to develop the world’s most electronically sophisticated immigration entry system for visitors, the Land Down Under has now developed a cost-effective way and cutting edge entry system for visitors — which delivers a level of service consistent with the expectation of today’s travelers.

Removing the need for Australia travel visa paper application forms, Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) — an Australia tourist visa subclass that is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia for short-term visits or business entry — has replaced the traditional visa label or stamp in a passport and reduces the need for travellers to visit an Australian Embassy.

ETA Visa: A tourist visa for Australia

ETA Visa Requirements

Under the ETA, in order for the Australia holiday visa applicant to be eligible to apply for an ETA, they must:

be outside Australia when lodging the online travel visa to Australia application

hold a citizen passport of an ETA eligible country

have a valid credit card (American Express, Diners Club, JCB, MasterCard, or Visa)

How to apply for an ETA?

As an ETA is equivalent to a visa, there is no need for the holiday visa Australia applicants to visit an Australian diplomatic office to submit an application. They can apply for an ETA either:

through a travel agent, airline or visa specialist service provider arranging an ETA on their behalf

at an Australian visa office outside Australia

How does ETA Visa Works?

The ETA is issued electronically by a computer system operated for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of Australia. You are advised to apply for your ETA at least two weeks before your proposed date of travel.

In lodging the ETA application, all you need to do is enter the details from your passport and your credit card information. However, take note that as your ETA is linked to the passport number you used in your application, you must use the same passport to travel to Australia.

Once the application is lodge, it is processed immediately and would only take less than 30 seconds — or in a small number of cases, you will need to check back in 12 hours to confirm whether your application has been successful.

When you arrive at an airport for check-in on a flight to Australia, the airline check-in staff can electronically confirm that you have authority to board the flight to Australia.

Picture an entire continent filled with unique and exciting adventures. Now think of urbane and tolerant cities, perfect for the gay traveler. Imagine vacationing in a land of wonders so diverse, with settings (both natural and manmade) so magnificent, it truly boggles the mind.

Australia offers the gay traveler an impressive and welcoming destination unlike any other in the world. It is no wonder gay couples and singles are heading “Down Under” for the experience of a lifetime.

In Australia, if you can dream it, you can do it! Consider visiting the native aboriginal culture. Journey into the Outback, where you can rough it; visit Kings Canyon, Kakadu National Park and the Devil’s Marbles. Or how about taking a nature tour for up-close study of koalas, kangaroos and whales? Gay travelers can visit the beautiful sandy beaches and enjoy scuba diving, sunbathing, boating, and glorious relaxation.

Throughout Australia, the pristine and breathtaking scenery is awe-inspiring.

Tourists from around the globe flock to Australia to experience its beauty. Miles and miles of untouched wilderness await you, along with mountains and brilliant beaches.

Australia is home to one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world: Sydney. From the grandeur of the Sydney Opera House to boho galleries and fine dining; from the North and South Coast beaches to tropical environments…in Sydney, the gay traveler is just steps away from action and new experiences at every turn. Museums, art galleries, zoos, gourmet dining, first-rate shopping, spas and sporting events-these are just a few of the diversions you can find in this historic city. Be sure to grab a copy of the Sydney Star Observer (Sydney’s gay newspaper) for information on the local scene, including nightlife and clubs.

For gay travel that includes driving, consider embarking on the Pacific Coast Touring Route and take in the lush and quaint scenery.

But remember, Australians drive on the left side of the road! If that sounds too sedate, you can get your heart pumping during various water sports, such as river rafting or kayaking.

Since Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are “opposite” from those we experience in North America. In general, Australia’s coastal regions are warm and humid, while the interior regions are desert-like and dry, with blistering temperatures in the daytime that dip to freezing at night.

Finding suitable accommodations in Australia is a breeze, with many gay-and-lesbian-owned hotels open for business. The discerning traveler can choose from the most luxurious four-star experience to less expensive digs. There are hotels and apartments to fit all budgets, in addition to hostels and camping.

When returning home a few years ago, I packed my keys in my suitcase, only to find out at the baggage claim that it did not arrive with me. There I was stuck at the airport with no keys to drive my car or ability to enter my home once I got there! Well since then I have collected a list of “to do’s” to make my travel go more smoothly. Since people travel all year round these days, I thought I’d share this list with you. Here’s to stress-less vacations.

10 Tips for Travel:

1. Carry on luggage: Don’t make my mistake; be sure to take your medication and keys with you on board in case your luggage doesn’t arrive with you. The carry-on should include your “must haves” such as: medications, toiletries, emergency contacts and travel documents, passport or other ID, a change of underwear or whatever else you can’t live without.

2. Keep a standard list of travel items on file, listing all the necessities. You can add/delete as the season or occasion indicates, but at least you’ll have a complete record from which to choose.

3. Identify your luggage with some personalized touch. It could be a colorful tag, luggage strap, or even spray paint a small design on the side…that certainly won’t get torn off!

4. Stay hydrated while traveling, especially when you fly.

Experts recommend drinking one cup of water for every hour in flight. You can carry a small plastic water bottle with you through security and fill it at a water fountain after you pass through. That saves a few bucks before you even leave!

5. Take small exercise breaks during your flight. Be sure to get up and walk every hour or so to keep the blood circulating in your lower extremities. If you can’t get up, then at least stretch in your seat and flex your feet and move your legs.

6. Avoid jetlag by curtailing alcohol on board, eat light meals and only when hungry and drink plenty of water. When the flight departs, set your watch to the destination time zone to begin acclimating to the change. When you arrive, avoid taking a nap, which only prolongs jetlag. Instead get some fresh air by taking a walk or choose activities fitting to the new time frame.

7. Out of the country I find many hotels, especially the smaller ones, look alike. I always take hotel stationary or matchbook and drop it in my purse. Then if I need to take a taxi or ask directions, I have the exact name and address with me and no worries about potential language barriers.

8. One pleasure about traveling is escaping from the barrage of daily news. However, I’ve learned that is not such a good idea. Once I missed a flight due to bad weather, which made my trip home nearly unbearable. So I now follow the news, albeit in small doses, but enough to keep abreast of weather and other potential delays. Most airlines offer cell or text alerts that notify you in case of flight changes. Request that information when you book your flight to avoid unexpected hassles.

9. Be mindful of staying healthy as you travel. Be sure to wash your hands frequently and keep a liquid antibacterial handy when needed. Avoid others who appear ill and clean areas in your hotel room known to harbor germs such as the phone, TV remote, etc. If you are not feeling well, don’t leave home without consulting your doctor.

10. If you collect things on your trip and need more room in your suitcase, why not take older clothes with you to shed along the way. I’ve done that and the hotel staff was happy to find a place for my sneakers, jeans or other items. That freed up luggage space for my souvenirs and other newly purchased items.

Bonus: One site I researched suggested that you shower in your underwear. Well, I wouldn’t have thought of that, but it certainly supports “going green!”

No matter if you are jetting off to a far away place, touring the heartland or planning an economic “stay-cation,” I wish you a wonderful and safe vacation. We all need time to relax and revitalize, so have fun!

In general, Indochina area is safe for travelers and tourists. Violent attacks rarely happen, but heist is a problem in Indochina area, just like what is happening in most part of this world. Don’t worry about it; here are some tips for you to take some precautions while travelling in Indochina area:

Secure your valuable possessions in the hotel safe, if there isn’t one in your hotel room, the hotel front desk can provide the same service.
If you use traveller’s cheque, the suggestion is to write down the cheque numbers on a piece of paper, cross out the one after you use it to make your own record.
Take pictures of the information of the credit cards you are going to use while travelling, leave the ones that you don’t need at home; print the pictures and bring them in your luggage.
Use the same common sense travelling in Indochina area that you would at home, don’t use shortcuts and try not to walk alone at night. If you have to go out after dark, let somebody know when you are expected to come back to hotel.
Don’t put your wallet or mobile phone in the back pocket of your pants or anywhere else that is easily reached, thieves can reach them easily too. Be vigilant in markets and crowded places.
Wear the shoulder strap of your bag across your chest, and walk with the bag away from the curb to avoid drive-by purse-snatchers. It is more of a problem in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Phen, but there are a few incidences in Vientiane too.
Don’t discuss your personal matters and travel plans with strangers while traveling in Indochina area.
Traffic is chaotic in Indochina area, especially in Vietnam. It’s illegal to ride on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, it’s not only required according to the local law system, but also made for your personal safety.
When crossing the street on foot, walk at a slow and steady pace, looking up and meeting the driver’s eyes, the traffic will flow around you.
Monitor the media for information about possible safety and security risks.

There are special tips at different countries and regions in Indochina area:
Vietnam: Tourists are sometimes not authorized to travel to certain areas of Vietnam in deemed sensitive by the Vietnam Government.

Cambodia: The landmines are no longer a concern to regular tourists, but pay attention to them because the remaining mines concentrated in the border areas (particularly the Thai Border), some mountain areas, and other war zones.

Laos: Landmines are the main concern to travelers; make sure where you cannot go to with your guide or the local people.

Thailand: In this country, you cannot avoid the beautiful beaches, do wear a life jacket when you hire a water scooter or a jet ski, and keep away from areas people are swimming.

Southwest China: This region is a well-developed tourist destination, while traveling in this area, you need to make sure that your driver is licensed and experienced, because of the complex terrain and road conditions. You can visit http://www.indochinaodysseytours.com to get more information about this.
